Cool Mail!

Ooh! Look what I got in the mail today! I'm excited but turning the cover it looks like I may already have this stuff, besides I was looking for a magnitude of pictures. Loads of text. I'm always hoping that when I get a new book there will be loads of photos I haven't seen. Photo's are the best because they bring everything to life (DUH!).

X Marks the Spot is a fun book. A Chicago cop gave a copy of it to the local FBI office in 1930 and it's been a part of their Capone file ever since. A couple of years the grandchildren of the author (Hal Andrews) had the whole book online but it's since been removed. Don't know if it's true but I've heard this was the result of legal threats from some English publisher who've reprinted it.

Could be it was reprinted in the UK there is also a very bad reprint that was done in the US going under "Chicago Gang Wars" I don't think that one was official the pictures are grainy...What's funny are the stories....and the dramatic slant that the journalist take. Sometimes I don't think they were overly concerned with facts or maybe they were the facts as known in 1930.

It's funny but I've got a book here called The Golden Age of Crime by Arthur Reeve, published in 1930, that has a picture of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre which is captioned with the date "February 14, 1930." You'd think at the time they'd have gotten that date right. Guess time flies when you're having fun!
